You’ll love Harris’ south coast, transforms in spring sunshine into a stunning sweep of wildflowers and large variety of birds. Wild walks and the unspoiled beautiful nature are the main attraction; for nightlife, look not for neon lights, but stars to totally relax!
Our cottages
Grandfather’s house
This is the sweetest, a chunky stone cottage with deep jewel-like windows enjoying limited beach views. Inside are fun furnishings, a wood burning stove, full kitchen, washing machine and under eaves, an open-plan bedroom and shower room.
“Puffin” Tiny-house
Puffin is a lovely uniquely designed Tiny-House for a couple, at a 5 min. walking distance from the beach with stunning beach view and sea views at Northton (peacefully located off the A859)- South Harris with off road designated parking.
“Peregrine” Tiny-house
Peregrine is the sister cottage and similar to Puffin. It is a 5 minute walk to Northton’s five silver shell-sand beaches & Scarista beach. Or walk up to Cheapabhal/Maodal hills, for breathtaking views. Each tiny house sits on it’s own private plot.
Your hosts
Jan and Suzan are warm hosts who go out of their way for you – or leave you in peace. On arrival we’ll inform you with the OS map on the table, about: beach access, walking the many beaches which the Isle of Harris has to offer. Also information about cycling, swimming, seal-watching, bird watching, kayaking, fresh seafood, starry night skies, or even the aurora borealis.
Excellent fishing opportunities (salmon/trout) at Harris fishing estates, or play golf at the most beautiful Harris golf course, right at the edge of the Atlantic at Scarista Beach, see Eagles at the North Harris Eagle Observatory. Or enjoy a day’s excursion with Kilda Cruises. Look for culture and art at Gaerinnan Black House Village, the Callanish Standing Stones (older then Stonehenge) the Isle of Lewis, the Lewis Chessmen in Lewis Castle – Stornoway, The Lighthouse at Ness, Eilean Glass lighthouse – Scalpay, Hushenish, The Isle of Scarp and Amhuinsuidhe Castle – North Harris.
Reviews state that most of our guests have enjoyed their stay at the cottages, the beach walks, seeing Seals, the Golden and White tailed Eagle, Otters, Eiders, Puffins, Dolphins, Porpoises, Basking sharks, and an abundance of sea birds from Oyster catchers, Skua’s, Terns, to hearing the Cuckoo and Corncrake and watching the abundance of flowers on the machair.

What is there to do on Harris if I am not looking for a busy holiday?
Many visitors come to Harris simply to spend time outdoors. From the cottages, you can walk to several beaches,Like the Temple walk at Northton to see the 5 secluded jewel beaches, Scarista Beach, Luskentyre, Horgabost and Nisabost beach, Rodel church to exploring coastal paths and nearby hills, like the Coffin Road. Watch wildlife, see Seals on rocks, Fish the lochs, visit Seallam! at Northton, local galleries, or enjoy a round of golf at Scarista’s Harris Golfcourse.
How close are the cottages to the beaches?
The cottages are located in Northton, within easy walking distance of several beaches, including the famous white shell-sand beaches of the area. Most guests find themselves reaching the beach within minutes, weather for a morning walk, an afternoon swim, or an evening sunset sitting in front of a beach fire, or having bbq on the beach. For our photographers and artists there is plenty scenery worth taking a picture, or trying to capture the atmosphere in oil or watercolours.
What wildlife might I encounter during my stay?
The Isle of Harris is known for its rich coastal wildlife throughout the year. Depending on the season and a little luck, guests regularly spot Seals, Otters, Eagles, Puffins at an excursion to the Shiants Island. Dolphins, Porpoises, and a wide variety of seabirds while exploring the surrounding landscape. As we have many trees around the tiny houses, and Grandfather’s Hous, birds are not far away Corncrakes, Cuckoo’s, Wren’s, Willow Warblers, Robbin’s, GreenFinches, are nesting at our croft.
Is Harris a good base for exploring the Outer Hebrides?
Harris offers a balance of dramatic mountain scenery, world-class beaches, historic sites, excursions to St.Kilda, and easy access to neighbouring Isle of Lewis. From Northton, guests can enjoy local walks and attractions nearby, while also making day trips to historic sites, traditional blackhouses, art galleries, and the famous Callanish Stones. TheCalmac Ferry goes 5 times a day to the southern Islands, the Uists, worth a day trip, walking the large beach at Berneray.
